The Gaslamp Org
A redesigned website for the historical center of San Diego.

Modernizing an Outdated Website for Scalability
Gaslamp.org had an outdated, hard-coded website that was visually and functionally behind modern standards, making it difficult to maintain and impossible to scale as the organization grew.
My role was to lead the redevelopment and modernization of the site to create a scalable, maintainable, and user-friendly platform.
I rebuilt the site using WordPress as a CMS, implementing a modular block-based system with reusable templates, mobile-responsive design, and easy-to-manage backend fields for non-technical staff.
The organization gained full control over their site updates, launched new campaigns faster, and set a foundation for adding features like event calendars and business directories without major redevelopment.

Improving User Experience (UX) and Accessibility
The previous website had poor navigation, a cluttered layout, and was not mobile-friendly, frustrating visitors and limiting engagement.
One of my key objectives was to overhaul the user experience to be intuitive, mobile-optimized, and accessible.
I streamlined the navigation into logical categories, created mobile-first responsive layouts, and applied accessibility best practices (contrast, keyboard navigation, alt text, etc.).
Bounce rates dropped, time-on-site increased, and the site became more inclusive for all visitors, supporting tourism and community initiatives more effectively.

Enabling Marketing Flexibility
The marketing team previously had to rely on developers for even minor content changes or event updates.
I needed to design a system that empowered the marketing team to independently create and manage content.
I built flexible page builder modules (custom post types, ACF fields, Gutenberg blocks) so the team could easily create landing pages, update business listings, and add events without touching code.
The marketing team dramatically reduced turnaround times for campaigns, grew content output by 40%, and had full autonomy over site management.

Future-Proofing the Website for Long-Term Growth
The old site’s rigid structure made it difficult to add new functionality, like enhanced event calendars, business directories, or partnerships.
I needed to create an infrastructure that could accommodate new features as organizational needs evolved.
I architected a modular, API-ready WordPress platform and integrated scalable plugins and custom modules, ensuring the site could easily handle future expansions like booking systems or e-commerce.
The website became a long-term asset, ready to grow with the organization without the need for another costly rebuild.

Modernizing the Brand’s Online Presence
Gaslamp.org’s outdated design didn’t reflect the vibrancy and modern energy of the Gaslamp Quarter.
Part of the redesign was to realign the website's visual identity with the district’s brand and marketing efforts.
I collaborated closely with brand managers to develop a clean, vibrant, and visually dynamic design system that emphasized photography, local businesses, and community events.
The revitalized site strengthened the brand’s online presence, better supported tourism marketing, and helped drive increased foot traffic and business engagement in the district.
